Mini version of amazing Natural Wonders of Philippines in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental

When life gets crazy busy, it’s so easy to get caught up in the stresses of everyday life. And for me the easiest way to escape it is to go out and spend some time with nature. Being an outdoorsy kinda guy, nature has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration. Last weekend, without any plan or a fixed itinerary but only a strong need to get away from the chaos of the big city, we went on a road trip to the highlands of Negros where the air is fresher and the breeze is cooler.
Don Salvador Benedicto is a highland town in northern Negros Occidental landlocked between the cities of Bacolod and San Carlos. The town is considered the summer capital of the province because of its high altitude and cool climate. I have been here several times and have enjoyed it each time. This town never fails to amaze me because each time I visit, I always find something new to explore. This time we decided to take things slow. We stopped from time to time along the way if we see something interesting, took some photos (actually, a lot of it and mostly selfies! LOL), talk to the locals and just enjoyed the view around us. While it’s tempting to travel quickly, taking things slow actually proved to be enjoyable. I realized when you remove the urge to rush things, you see more of your destination. It proved to be true on this trip. The view of beautiful landscape and majestic mountains along the way were an absolute feast for the eyes. At one point my friend uttered, it’s like seeing Philippines amazing natural wonders in one place. In Don Salvador you can see a mini version of the Rice Terraces of Banaue, the pine forest of Sagada, the Lion’s head of Baguio and even the Chocolate Hills of Bohol. The entire town has so much beauty and simplicity it will take your breath away. You don’t have to go to Bohol to see the world famous Chocolate Hills. Negros has its very own Chocolate hills. Even though they are not as numerous as the chocolate hills in Bohol, they have a striking resemblance giving you a glimpse of how it looks like there.
If you think that the rice terraces can only be found in Banaue, you should think again. Don Salvador Benedicto has mountains and terrains carved out to form these green terraces too!
Slowly becoming a popular landmark in Don Salvador is this 10-foot statue of the lion of the Lions Club International set against a scenic view of the Northern Negros Natural Park. Don’t forget to drop by to pose for a souvenir photos.
The cool air and the spectacular view of thick pine tree forest along the way is enough to make you feel like you are in Sagada.
Get a good view of the Malatan-og Falls at its Viewing Deck. If you feel adventurous enough, you can trek going to the waterfalls which can take about about 30 minutes to an hour.
