As summer comes to an end, I’m looking back at this summer’s adventures driving a full circle around Panay Island where I got to play tourist in my hometown, explored to new areas, did new things and revisited old favorites. Panay Island is composed of 4 provinces namely Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique. Although Panay is popularly known as the gateway to Boracay, the country’s premier beach destination, less known to many is that this island itself is home to many stunning beaches, rivers, mountains & forest to which some remained untouched and hidden. It is also a region rich in culture and history. Sometimes I have a feeling that I have underestimated the beauty of what Panay Island can offer that is why I was glad to have the chance to explore the wealth of attractions and cultural heritage of the island last summer.
Picking the right accommodation during travels is always a daunting task. If you’re not super young like me (full disclosure: I’m in my thirties LOL) who loves traveling on a budget but at the same time still cares about comfort and experience, I usually prefer to stay in a small hotel whose location is perfect for my itinerary and whose services are always personal and homey.
The more I see of Negros, the more I realize there is so many unspoiled beauty found in the province that are waiting to be discovered. Beyond being known as the major producer of sugar in the Philippines, Negros Occidental offers not just this sweet commodity for your sweet tooth but also beautiful spots that are less-known and less talked about which I believe will be perfect for your summer adventure!
I have been getting emails and request on instagram regarding our detailed itinerary on our backpacking trip on Southern part of Cebu so I decided to come up with this article so that travelers who are planning to backpack South Cebu can get more detailed information on how to go about your trip. This article is going to highlight how we managed our time to make the most of our 4 days to see some of the best spots South Cebu has to offer.
It was pretty easy to go around Cebu because commuting was fairly cheap and stress-free because of its extensive bus route, so you never have to worry wasting your precious time waiting for the next bus to arrive as buses come by every 15-20 minutes along the highway. What we did was to do a round-the-south route which started in Cebu city going towards the western part by Cebu via Samboan route and then transferred bus in Ceres bus station of Bato in Samboan circling the southern tip of the island via Oslob advancing towards the eastern part then back to Cebu city.
Let me begin this post by saying that it’s great to be back to blogging once again. I was so inspired with my latest trip in southern Cebu last weekend that I feel very enthusiastic to write about it. I’ve always known the province since childhood when my parents, who are devotees of the patron of Cebu, used to bring me to the Basilica de Santo Nino to attend mass and pay homage to Senor Sto. Nino. My subsequent visits were just confined to the metro either for work or just a stopover for a trip to the neighboring provinces. That was all I know about Cebu without really knowing what lies beyond the perimeter of this concrete jungle. Little did I realize back then that there is actually more to Cebu than just a progressive IT hub.

Mingalabar is a Burmese greeting which simply means hello or good day. We spent 10 days backpacking Myanmar and this was the very first Burmese word I learned to pronounce correctly. Thanks to my Burmese friend Htoo, who was very keen to teach me his language. This auspicious basic word would always come in handy whenever we walked into a new place where I would always try my best to correctly greet the people with a happy “Mingalabar!” and they would joyfully greet me back or sometimes giggle and smile if I mispronounce it.

When life gets crazy busy, it’s so easy to get caught up in the stresses of everyday life. And for me the easiest way to escape it is to go out and spend some time with nature. Being an outdoorsy kinda guy, nature has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration. Last weekend, without any plan or a fixed itinerary but only a strong need to get away from the chaos of the big city, we went on a road trip to the highlands of Negros where the air is fresher and the breeze is cooler.
